India ranks its cities by the last full census, from 2011. Mumbai and Delhi both have more than 11 million people inside the city limits alone.
The map shows India alone, in detail. Each dot sits at the exact position of the city centre.
How to play
- Each city is a red dot on the map from the start. The dots show where the cities are, not which one is which.
- A numbered list on the left shows the ranks 1 to 10. Type the city names in any order.
- You can start to type right away. You do not need to click the answer box first.
- A correct name turns the dot and its rank green and shows the name and the population.
- Local names, old names and English names count. Accents are not required.
- A timer tracks your run. The quiz saves your best score and best time.
- If you are stuck, use the give up button. The map then shows the cities you missed.
What counts in this quiz
- Exactly 10 cities, ranked by population of the municipal corporation (the city proper).
- The figures are from 2011 census and are rounded.
- Mumbai is the biggest city with about 12.4M people.
What's not included — and why
- Delhi counts as one city. The National Capital Territory has more than 16 million people, but the municipal corporation figure is used here.
- Lucknow, Kanpur and Nagpur are the next three cities, each with about 2.5 to 2.9 million people.
Good to know
- Surat, the diamond-cutting centre of India, is bigger than Pune and Jaipur.
- Bangalore grew from about 5.7 million in 2001 to 8.4 million in 2011.
- Five of the ten cities are state capitals: Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata. Delhi is the national capital.
