Japan has 12 cities with more than one million people. Four of the ten on this list sit around Tokyo Bay, so the dots there are close together.

How to play
- Each city is a red dot on the map from the start. The dots show where the cities are, not which one is which.
- A numbered list on the left shows the ranks 1 to 10. Type the city names in any order.
- You can start to type right away. You do not need to click the answer box first.
- A correct name turns the dot and its rank green and shows the name and the population.
- Local names, old names and English names count. Accents are not required.
- A timer tracks your run. The quiz saves your best score and best time.
- If you are stuck, use the give up button. The map then shows the cities you missed.
What counts in this quiz
- Exactly 10 cities, ranked by population of the city (the 23 special wards for Tokyo).
- The figures are from 2020 census and are rounded.
- Tokyo is the biggest city with about 9.7M people.
What's not included — and why
- Tokyo counts as the 23 special wards, about 9.7 million people. Tokyo Metropolis, which adds the western suburbs and islands, has about 14 million.
- Hiroshima and Sendai are the next two cities, each with about 1.1 million people.
Good to know
- Yokohama, Kawasaki and Saitama all touch Tokyo. Together with Tokyo they form the largest urban area in the world.
- Sapporo did not exist before 1868. It was planned as the capital of Hokkaido and now has almost two million people.
- Kyoto was the capital of Japan for more than 1,000 years, until 1868.
