United Kingdom Biggest Cities Quiz — Rules & What Counts
The United Kingdom has no single official city population. This quiz counts the council area of each city, so Greater London is one city and Leeds includes its whole metropolitan district.
The map shows United Kingdom alone, in detail. Each dot sits at the exact position of the city centre.
How to play
Each city is a red dot on the map from the start. The dots show where the cities are, not which one is which.
A numbered list on the left shows the ranks 1 to 10. Type the city names in any order.
You can start to type right away. You do not need to click the answer box first.
A correct name turns the dot and its rank green and shows the name and the population.
Local names, old names and English names count. Accents are not required.
A timer tracks your run. The quiz saves your best score and best time.
If you are stuck, use the give up button. The map then shows the cities you missed.
What counts in this quiz
Exactly 10 cities, ranked by population of the city council area.
The figures are from 2022 estimates and are rounded.
London is the biggest city with about 8.8M people.
What's not included — and why
Cardiff and Belfast are not on the list. Cardiff has about 360,000 people and Belfast about 350,000, both below Bristol.
Leicester, Coventry and Nottingham fall just outside the top 10.
Greater Manchester is not one city. Only the Manchester council area counts, so Salford, Bolton and Stockport are separate.
Good to know
London has more people than the next nine cities on the list together.
Leeds is the third city on this list because its council area covers the whole district, not only the city centre.
Bradford is one of the ten but is rarely named as a big city. Its district has more than 540,000 people.
