Spain Autonomous Communities Quiz — Rules & What Counts
Spain has 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities — 19 answers in total. This quiz shows a blank map of Spain. You type the name of each one, and the map colors that area in place.
The 2 autonomous cities are Ceuta and Melilla. They sit on the coast of North Africa, and the map draws them very small. You type them, so their size does not matter.
How to play
Type names in any order. A correct name colors the area on the map at once.
You can start to type right away. You do not need to click the answer box first.
English and Spanish names both count. "Catalonia" and "Cataluña" score the same community.
Accents are not required. "Andalucia" counts for Andalucía.
A timer tracks your run. The quiz saves your best score and best time.
If you are stuck, use the give up button. The map then shows the areas you missed.
What counts in this quiz
The 17 autonomous communities and the 2 autonomous cities.
The Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands each count as one community.
What's not included — and why
Provinces are not answers. Seville, Málaga and Alicante are provinces, not communities.
Cities are not answers. Barcelona and Bilbao do not score. Madrid does, because it is also a community.
Gibraltar is a British territory. It is not on the map and it is not an answer.
Good to know
Castile and León is the largest community by area. It is larger than Portugal.
Andalusia has the most people. More than 8 million live there.
The Canary Islands lie about 100 km off Morocco, and they use a time zone one hour behind mainland Spain.
Ceuta and Melilla are the only land borders that the European Union shares with Africa.
La Rioja is the smallest of the 17 communities, and it gives its name to the wine region.
